Development of a Hybrid Timber–Aluminium Glass Façade with Integrated Photovoltaics

The project is currently being implemented

Project code: PK.1.1.12.0108

Windor Ltd., a company specialising in wood production and processing and construction, in partnership with the University of Zagreb – Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology, commenced the implementation of the project “Development of a Hybrid Timber–Aluminium Glass Façade with Integrated Photovoltaics” on 1 January 2026.

The project is being carried out in accordance with the rules of the Call for Proposals “IRI S3 – Increasing the development of new products and services arising from research and development activities”, within the Competitiveness and Cohesion Programme 2021–2027. The project is co-financed by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

The Ministry of Regional Development and EU Funds acts as the Managing Authority (MA), the Ministry of Economy as the Intermediate Body Level 1 (IB1), and the Croatian Agency for SMEs, Innovation and Investments – HAMAG-BICRO as the Intermediate Body Level 2 (IB2).

Project objective

The objective of the project is the development of a hybrid timber–aluminium glass façade with integrated photovoltaics, enabling the integration of photovoltaic cells into insulated glass units in order to increase building energy efficiency, reduce CO₂ emissions, and ensure compliance with nearly Zero-Energy Building (nZEB) standards.

Project purpose

The purpose of the project is to develop a new product through cooperation with the University of Zagreb – Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology and to address technical and technological challenges related to combining timber and aluminium into a unified structural system.

The project includes the development of a structural solution that takes into account the different physical properties of materials, including aluminium thermal expansion and the hygroscopic behaviour of timber. A system of composite brackets and connection elements will be developed to ensure mechanical stability, durability, and functionality.

The project will be implemented through:

  • Industrial research (months 1–21)

  • Experimental development (months 22–36), including prototype development and testing up to TRL 8

  • Project management

  • Communication and visibility activities

Expected results

As a result of the project, two innovative products will be developed to technological readiness level TRL 8:

  • Suspended unitised façade

  • Façade with integrated photovoltaics

The project contributes to the Smart Specialisation Strategy priority areas:

  • Smart and Clean Energy

  • Customized and Integrated Wood Products
